Hi all,

Kara Lewantowicz, Dan Carragher, and I birded Chico Basin Ranch (fee area),
Pueblo & El Paso Counties this morning.

We found 87 species of birds.

Highlights:
Pueblo County:
American Bittern - 1 flying over Rose Pond, and the prairie/cholla nearby
Swamp Sparrow - 1 at Rose Pond (probably the bird Scott Shaum found recently)
Greater Scaup - 1 male at Headquarters Pond

El Paso County:
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2 at the Casita

Other stuff:
17 species of waterfowl (Common Goldeneye, Canvasback, Bufflehead, were all
still around).  We didn't see the previous reported Snow and Greater
White-fronted Geese.

Several Western and a few Eared Grebes, Black-crowned Night-Heron, White-faced
Ibis, and Franklin's Gulls.

Raptors included: a Sharp-shinned Hawk, and several Swainson's Hawks.

Virginia Rail and Marsh Wrens were in the marshes.

7 species of shorebirds, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, being the most interesting.

Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were around, as well as Scaled Quail and Curve-billed
Thrasher.

Land bird migrants were quite a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Orange-crowned
Warbler, 2 Common Yellowthroats, also a few Hermit Thrush, Spotted Towhee,
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, House Wrens, one male Lazuli
Bunting, a Sage Thrasher, a Northern Mockingbird, a few Western Kingbirds, four
species of swallows (no Tree or Violet-green), and an American Pipit.

The following sparrows were present: Cassin's, Chipping, Clay-colored
(singing), Brewer's (singing), Vesper, Lark, Song, and White-crowned.

All the regular blackbirds, grackles, and cowbird were also present.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival
