Hi Everyone--

Sunday 4/27 I was in SE Colorado driving north. On my way through
Springfield, I noted 3 Great-tailed Grackles displaying on top of a street
light. I drove east from US-287 along Baca CR VV toward Two Buttes SWA. Two
Rock Wrens were perched on the barbed wire part of a barbed-wire fence--I
didn't know they did that. A pair of Burrowing Owls was close to the road.
Many Cassin's Sparrows were singing, and a few were skylarking, although
they seemed less energetic in their skylarking than Cassin's in Arizona
after a rain in July. Most birds were singing while perched. A badger
waddled past me as I was watching the sparrows. I stopped behind the dam at
Two Buttes, and found a singing male Northern Cardinal, a Wilson's Warbler,
an Orange-crowned Warbler, a singing Canyon Wren, and too many Common
Grackles. At the woods behind Lamar Community College, I saw a Curve-billed
Thrasher (in a brush pile at the south end), a male Northern Cardinal (this
one is shy; I only saw it in flight), a Red-bellied Woodpecker, and a
Wilson's Warbler. At least three Brown Thrashers were singing.

Construction continues on US-287 between Springfield and Lamar. The wait was
short for me, but the line of cars and trucks going south looked really
long. Best to avoid the area if you can. Baca CR 8 to Black Mesa is a quite
birdy way to get around the mess.
