All week I've had three Grosbeak varieties visiting regularly... at least three
pairs (3 each, both sexes at the same time) Rose-breasted; about the same
number of Black-headed (4-5 at the same time); and several Evening Grosbeak
appearing from time to time.
Yesterday I also observed two male Lazuli Bunting tussling for possition at a
feeder and a single male Bullock's Oriole visits my hummingbird feeder daily.
(First seen Sunday May 3rd). I drilled out a few of the ports on each feeder
to accomodate these bigger birds. Last year they nested near here...as well as
the Western Tanagers (though I've yet to see them this year; oranges and grape
jelly already set out for them)
Speaking of hummingbirds: so far I have just a few...both Broad-tailed and
Black-chinned are here almost all the time.
Yesterday morning I watched two Magpie locked in some sort of altercation, fall
from the trees, tumbling to the ground. Of course they were fine, I saw that
they both flew up to different trees immediately afterwards.
Total list for the morning in my La Veta, Huerfano County CO yard was:
5 Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 1 Lazuli Bunting, 1 Bullock's Oriole, 11 American
Goldfinch, 45 Pine Siskin, 9 Eurasian Collared-Dove, 3 Black-chinned
Hummingbird, 2 Broad-tailed Hummingbird, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 1 Blue Jay, 2
Black-billed Magpie, 2 Black-capped Chickadee, 2 American Robin, 5 European
Starling, 17 Red-winged Blackbird, 5 Common Grackle, 4 Brown-headed Cowbird, 1
House Sparrow, 6 Turkey Vultures (who continue to nest in the big trees around
my home).
I live in La Veta by the river where Oak and West Francisco meet. My yard is
visible from both the front and the back...
