Hi COBirders,
Good bird day today - pretty steady captures all morning, totaling
about 75 new birds banded. The surprise today was the relative dearth
of warblers (after 50+ yesterday), and the arrival of the Swainson's
Thrushes. Nancy had banded about 5 SWTH for the season previously,
but 30 today. (interestingly - all but two were adults (ASY) birds,
and of those we could sex by size (half), all were males, and many
more probably were, but we couldn't be sure. It looked like a "male
vanguard" leading the way. Also around noon, we had a small wave of
Bullock's Orioles - captured and banded five, heard several more.
Banding Highlights for Friday:
FOS Common Poorwill (male, ASY) very cool in the hand! Unbelievable
cryptic coloration!
FOS male MacGillivray's Warbler,
FOS Veery
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, male, ASY
FOS Lincoln's Sparrow
(Myrtle Warbler -1 Audubon's Warbler -1 Orange-crowned Warbler -0)
- compared with 50 total yesterday.
Spotted Towhee - 5
Swainson's Thrush - 30 (one yesterday) - there were many more moving
through the trees all day. Plus - all of them were carrying high
levels of fat - so how far could they have come???
Yellow Warbler - 3
Wilson's Warbler -1
Common Yellowthroat - 4, m and f
and captured, but could not band, a Black-chinned Hummingbird female.
Interesting science today! Unfortunately we missed Bill M's Black-
throated Blue and Magnolia Warblers seen at the HQ.
