Hello, Birders.
Belatedly, I tried this morning, Monday, May 11th, to get in on some of this
Front Range fallout action. So I poked around Greenlee Preserve, Boulder
County, after breakfast. It was great! Highlights:
1 Gray-cheeked Thrush
2 Veeries
2 Blackpoll Warblers
85+ (!) Clay-colored Sparrows
Other stuff out there:
8 Wood Ducks
1 American Bittern
1 Snowy Egret
2 Black-crowned Night-Herons
2 Soras
11 Willets
5 Long-billed Dowitchers
1 Forster's Tern
1 Least Flycatcher
5 Dusky Flycatchers
2 Green-tailed Towhees
2 Brewer's Sparrows
10+ -oriantha- White-crowned Sparrows
The Gray-cheeked Thrush flew in giving its distinctive flight call, and then it
presented itself for a brief view. Both Veeries were vocal: one was calling
constantly, and the other was singing. One of the Blackpoll Warblers was a
singing male; the other was an SY ("first spring") female calling constantly.
The Clay-colored Sparrows were ridiculous; I think I see 0-5 individuals,
altogether, per SPRING, most years in Boulder County. What an awesome
phenomenon, this Front Range incursion of Clay-coloreds.
The action was concentrated mainly along the wooded path that separates
Greenlee Reservoir from Waneka Lake.
