My planned visit to Lamar was made extra special by being able to stop at Van’s
Grove and see/photograph Brandon’s Acadian Flycatcher yesterday afternoon.
Even though this bird had a very distinctive look and was heard, it took guts
to announce a potential First State Record empid. Thanks to Brandon via Bill
Maynard for getting the word out. You just never know about Colorado,
especially the eastern plains.

I birded the Lamar Community College Woods and Riverside Cemetery this
afternoon (windy and high of around 87, seemed like 97). Tonight it is
supposed to be 40 and only in the high 70’s tomorrow.

Highlights were:

LCC:
Northern Waterthrush (1) wet edge of the cattails due east of the LCC
cafeteria
American Redstart (1 male) at the extreme north end all afternoon
Wilson’s Warbler (1 male)
Northern Parula (1, possibly 2) heard only at far north end (the second bird
was vocally feeble, or the wind obscured the sound, or it was a Black-throated
Gray)
Black-and-white Warbler (1 male) north end
MacGillivray’s Warbler (1 male)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (at least 6, all females, mostly Audubon’s)
Northern Cardinal (1 male) south end
Red-bellied Woodpecker (heard) south end
[Mystery warbler (I suspect Kentucky, just got a fleeting glimpse as it flew
off – the bird was short-tailed, all yellow-green on the back, came out from
under golden currant bushes) location was due east of the LCC library and it
flew south]
Least Flycatcher (1)
Lazuli Bunting (1 male) FOS for me
Plumbeous Vireo (1)
Warbling Vireo (2) FOS for me
White-crowned Sparrow (3 of the dark-lored, dark-billed mountain race)

Riverside Cemetery:
Canada Goose (1 pair) not common in Lamar in the summer
Great-tailed Grackle (1 male out in a flooded field) a big flock hangs out in
town s of Olive on 1st St. and nearby blocks
Bank Swallow (few overhead – they nest somewhere near Carder’s gravel pits n of
the Ark River east of Main St.)

Willow Valley Subdivision:
White-winged Dove (2) coming to safflower at feeder
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (1 male) coming to a feeder, photos obtained
Black-chinned Hummingbird (1 female) coming to a feeder
Western Tanager (1 male) coming to oranges
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1 female) coming to a sunflower feeder
Black-headed Grosbeak (3) coming to a sunflower feeder

Still a fair number of Pine Siskins around Lamar, presumably breeding locally
again.
