Subject: Highline Canal, Douglas Co. 5/23 -- Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow Warbler
We're visiting from Maryland. We had a nice walk this morning along the Highline Canal in Douglas County starting at County Line Road just west of McClellan Reservoir and walking south and west. Highlights were a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak singing and consuming lots of insects in a cottonwood near the bridge that crosses the canal from the paved parking lot just off County Line Road, a male Wood Duck posing on a limb over the Canal, and more Yellow Warblers than we have EVER seen. They outnumbered any other species we saw and heard (even the House Wrens that were a close second). Complete list from my eBird report is below. (By the way, if any Colorado eBird reviewers/administrators are reading this, it would help to add "swallow sp" to the eBird list of species for Colorado. We had lots of high-flying swallows that we could not identify to species. This is an option that is available when I report to eBird in Maryland.)
