Hello, Birders. Just a quick update from Day 1 in the San Luis Valley. "Write-in" birds reported thus far today (Saturday, May 23rd) include Glossy Ibis, Marbled Godwit, White-rumped Sandpiper, Stilt Sandpiper, Lewis's Woodpecker, Least Flycatcher, Cassin's Kingbird, Yellow-throated Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, Worm-eating Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Scott's Oriole. I was on the Medano-Zapata Ranch trip earlier today. Highlights: 2 Northern Parulas, 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and 1 Least Flycatcher; 4 Evening Grosbeaks and 1 Blue Grosbeak; Sage Sparrows and Sage Thrashers out in the greasewood/rabbitbrush scrub; a Peregrine Falcon working a flock of swallows and Black Terns; a high-flying flock of Franklin's Gulls; lots of empids, including Gray Flycatcher; 1 singing Olive-sided Flycatcher; and 1 Black-chinned Hummingbird around the ranch buildings. Also: a thundering herd of bison; elk; porcupine; and magnificent scenery (rainy and cool here). Tomorrow awaits!
