We birded north from the CFO convention through many back roads.
State 112 north of Del Norte found us the Sage Thrasher that we missed
2 days before. There were numerous up singing. Road 15 west to South
Fork was birdy and in addition to the usuals we saw 2 pairs of mating
Red -tailed Hawks.
We went north on 149 through Creede and Lake City. Sadly Creede and
Mineral County have failed to have any sensable land use and it is
chopped up second homes for way too many miles.
Paradise campground and Coller SWA were good. Singing Warbling
Vireos, Yellow Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, Black-headed Grosbeak,
Western Tanager, Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, both Chickadees, Mt.
Bluebirds, the wonderful American Robins, lots of Corvids as well.
Several lakes yielded Common Mregansers, Brown -headed Cowbirds, tons
of Violet-green Swallows and Canadians, Mallards and Gadwall.
We dropped over Slumgullion Pass and just decided for a quick look at
Lake San Cristobal. 2 hours later we can report we watched a juvenile
Bald Eagle watch ducks and Geese. Very beautiful bird who stayed in 1
spot on a log on the ground for 1/2 hour. We were also treated to
singing Townsend Solitaires , Wilson's Warblers ,a female
Calliope ,many Mt. Bluebirds and several empids.
Additionally we saw our second Moose in a week, this time at almost
the top of Slumgullion. What a wonderful state we live in
