Last Thursday I went back to Brush Hollow Reservoir northeast of Canon City
in hopes I could get some close views of very late Red-throated Loon found
by Rich Miller last week. Since I don't digiscope, I needed the loon to be
within a few hundred feet to get reasonable good photos with my telephoto
lens combination on my dslr. I got there in the morning before too many
fishermen took out boats and lined the shores on this fairly small lake so
the loon was only a few hundred feet from the shore on the west side. I was
delighted to get good views through my scope for almost 15 minutes
(previously I have only seen this species far out on Lake Pueblo). I
finally edited and posted a few photos to my blog at
http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com The photos, and the views I got through
my scope, showed the loon in non-breeding/Definitive Basic plumage though
there are some smudges on the front of it's white neck that may be part of
it's molt into breeding/Alternate plumage.
