Hi Folks, Over the long weekend I was down at Lake George Colorado (on 24 behind Colorado Springs) and there was a spectacular mayfly hatch. Swallows of different shapes and sizes were loving it, and hundreds if not thousands fed over the lake. One bird stood out from the swallows. It's body/size/flight was like some sort of cross between a night hawk and a plover with decisive/efficient-looking wing beats. It's color was brown (perhaps grey, I could not easily tell) but oddly with a dark underbelly, perhaps darkest under the wings. It would fly around and (I believe) pick floundering bugs off the water. Any pointers on what this might be?
Also, I saw a small bird lurking in the cat tails that flew awkwardly (legs hanging down) when I got closer. I think it is a rail. I've sent it a few times at this place and it wonder if it is a Virginia Rail. Does that make sense for this area, or are there other contenders? Thanks in advance for any help. While there also saw merganser, white pelican, cormorant and geese with goslings. With the lake now being full again, and the cat tails growing once more, the yellow-headed and red-winged blackbirds were in abundance. regards, Adam -- Free Wildlife iPhone Application: http://wildobs.com/about/iphone Videos: http://www.youtube.com/wildobservations --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Join us at the 2009 Convention in Alamosa: http://cfo-link.org/convention/index.php You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
