Had another White-winged Dove visit today; perhaps it will stay around… and out of trouble. Something happened to the last one’s feet (as if they froze or something; they turned black!) and after several weeks’s hanging around…it disappeared.
I also thought, for a moment, another Indigo Bunting stopped by, but for as deep and dark a blue as the tiny thing was…it had wing-bars like the Lazuli Bunting. And…while it lacked the rufus breast-band, it did have a clear, white belly. I understand these two will hybridize where territories overlap…seems that may be happening here. The other day I was floored to count over 30 Brown-headed Cowbirds in my yard…it was creepy. Only about three Red-winged black-birds these days, though. Oddly, the Eurasian Collared Doves are fewer too…and finally I’ve had as many as four Mourning Doves in the yard at once; much nicer, in my book. I felt badly the Denver group who stopped by missed all the Rose- breasted Grosbeaks, but the Black-headed and Evening beauties still visit in droves. Same for the Orioles; I’ve seen as many as five male Bullock’s Orioles at once; they sure do like grape jelly. And while the Lesser Goldfinch are here in greater numbers all of a sudden; most of the finches are American Goldfinch and Pine Siskins with a few red, orange and yellow-variety House Finches thrown in. I miss the White-brested Nuthatches... I've not seen one in months and months. Will they come back? I’ve been watching closely, but still only see Broad-tailed and Black- chinned Hummingbirds around. Surely the beautiful Rufus and Calliopes can’t be far, huh? Oh, and the bob-tailed grackle hits the feeders regularly.
