I photographed a singing Eastern Meadowlark in the field south of 18th St where
Dotsero St dead-ends in southwest Loveland, Larimer County, late on Monday
afternoon June 1. This is a couple blocks east of Cattail Pond. Presumably this
same bird was observed calling (but not singing) on Saturday by Cole Wild and
Sunday by Sol Miller a bit further south and west, between Cattail Pond and Bud
Mielke Reservoir. Bobolinks have been heard singing in this area the last few
days, and in the fields west of Bud Mielke Res. Note that Western Meadowlarks
abound. The photos (witness quality) are at
http://www.pbase.com/quetzal/recent_bird_pix_june09.
Field marks supporting the identification of Eastern Meadowlark that are
discernable in the photos include the heavy crown-striping (particularly the
eye line seems too thick for Western Meadowlark), streaked flanks (rather than
spotted) and lack of yellow in the malar.
