My neighbor across the street, and I, continue to watch the White- winged Dove that is hanging around the big trees and large lawn areas of West Francisco Street, near the bridge just off Oak Street here in La Veta, Huerfano County.
Also regularly seen along this stretch of road are Black-headed Grosbeaks and the Evening Grosbeaks who are busily trying to feed their demanding fledglings. I suspect the Bullock’s Orioles will soon be bringing theirs too; they're here in droves. It is a rather wild area of tall evergreens, huge willows and giant cottonwoods, blended with large native shrubs, several natural ponds, the river and large grassy areas: West Francisco, near the bridge over Cuchara River...off Oak Street in the little town of La Veta, Huerfano County, CO. Last year, in June, I also watched White-breasted Nuthatch feeding newly fledged chicks, as well as a pair or two of Black-billed Magpies. It's fun to watch the big babies begging like any other chick. Unfortunately, I’ve not seen a single Nuthatch this year, nor Mountain Chickadees…which I watched last year. I hope they come back. Last June, the area also had Lesser and American Goldfinch breeding, and do again this year already, and four hummingbirds visit in June; Broad-tailed, Black-chinned, Rufus and Calliope. Perhaps the Indigo Buntings will continue to visit right along with the occasional Lazulis which come in June, too. The flycatchers love it here, too; I got a few shots of what I believe is a Western Wood Pewee several times. Some are different, but I am not so good at identifying the little tyrants. LOL I didn't get the pictures till July, but you can see them here: * http://ruralchatter.blogspot.com/search/label/Western%20Wood-Pewee Quite frankly, I also believe I've seen Black Phoebes in the area (which makes sense considering the habitat), but no phoebe photos, sorry.
