This morning while conducting a survey for RMBO I found two Indigo Buntings
along the Colorado River (one in Colorado and one in Utah). Both were
singing in riparian habitat along the river. It was very easy to document
breeding by several species - Western Kingbird, Northern Mockingbird, Common
Raven, Black-throated Sparrow, and Lark Sparrow just to name a few.

This spring and summer RMBO is conducting a study to determine if the
tamarisk leaf beetle could be impacting riparian birds in western Colorado
and eastern Utah. In the area that I surveyed this morning the tamarisk is
nearly completely defoliated (by the introduced beetle) and the beetles and
their larvae were easy to find. It will be interesting to see the long term
effects this beetle has on riparian areas in Colorado. We are hoping that
this project will be long term too in order to determine if the beetle does
make a difference.
