I went to Gregory Canyon about 11:00 a.m. today to try to find the Scarlet
Tanager, having pretty much given up on the Kentucky Warbler that I had tried
for on Sunday and Monday. As soon as I got there, I ran on to Bill Wuerthel who
said he had just heard the Kentucky Warbler, first found on 6/6 by Linda
Andes-Georges, and Bill said he had first heard it and seen it about 7:00 a.m.
We soon heard it singing again, and it sang quite a lot until I left the area
about a half hour later, but it was maddeningly difficult to spot. Eventually,
we spotted it about mid-level in tall trees. I got some fairly good photos
which I will post later. I also recorded the song. At 12:45 p.m. I found the
male Scarlet Tanager singing in a ponderosa pine about 10 yards from me. I got
excellent photos which I will post later. The tanager was about 50 yards up the
trail beyond utility pole #50. Later, I went to Skunk Canyon to photograph
Virginia's Warblers. I had no luck refinding the Chestnut-sided Warbler that I
had found there the morning of 6/7, although Peter Gent had refound it the
evening of 6/7. Junior rangers were doing trail work at the warbler spot, and
that might have something to do with not finding it today. I did get some
photos of a Virginia's Warbler, but it didn't want to pose much.
