I suspect many of you are sick of this thread already, but I felt compelled to
comment, especially considering all the negative, hateful comments directed at
these birds. I am a huge fan of these birds. I think they are very beautiful,
graceful birds that are very welcome adornments to our neighborhoods (much more
so than pigeons, starlings and house sparrows, all non-native species as well).
I find there song very pleasant also. They have become abundant in my
neighborhood and I am thrilled. On the Fort Collins CBC, I stumbled upon a
flock of several hundred at a feed lot. Wow, what a wondrous sight. There have
been a few reports of negative interactions with other species, but as far as I
can tell, nothing signifgicant. They seem to be occupying an available niche.
It is human nature to blame our problems on the newcomers, often other people,
but in this case, are these pleasant birds not being treated as scapegoats?
Aren't there bigger problems in our society to get our feathers ruffled about
besides the abundance of doves?? (Yes, of course, the pun was intended). This
is a rhetorical question - no reply needed. I'm guessing that the 800 or so
readers of Cobirds have read enough posts on this topic, so I encourage anyone
who must reply to do so directly to me, rather than to the listserve.
