While driving through Hotchkiss this morning about 10:20 I spotted a dark
hawk with very broad wings circling above town. I pulled over quickly and
grabbed my binoculars and confirmed my suspicion; it was an adult Common
Black-Hawk! The very broad wings, short tail, all black plumage, and very
noticeable white band near the base of the tail were the markings that I
used to make the identification. I have never seen this species in Colorado
but have seen them several times in New Mexico and Arizona. Immediately
after feeling confident about my identification I drove back to get Bill
Day, who I had just met up with to give some work equipment, and we were
able to drive a short distance through town and spot the hawk circling above
again. I then drove up to Andrea Robinsong's house and loaded her up in my
car quickly. We drove around and scanned the skies in the direction I
thought the bird might be heading but could not relocate it. Sorry Andrea!
I guess you never know what you might see when you are driving down the
road!
