Today I heard at least one Type 4 Red Crossbill just south of Estes
Park in mixed-conifer forest. Cole Wild, Nick Komar and I had a solo
Type 4 Red Crossbill at the top of Rist Canyon Road last Thursday
(6/4). These are only my second and third sightings of this type in
the state, but especially since Christian has also reported them, I
think they appear to be hanging out in the Front Range foothills at
least in small numbers right now.

If you're interested in learning more about crossbill types (and what
they sound like), check out my first post at the blog I started recently:

I've posted links to various online ID articles and online sound
files. I hope some people will find them useful!
