I conducted some bird surveys in north central Colorado this week.
Some highlights were the following;
Routt National Forest (approximate area, Cty Rd 24 and FR 625)
In this area there was extensive bark beetle damage.
American Three-toed Woodpecker
Boreal Owl
Northern Goshawk (it seemed like it was carrying food)
Red-naped Sapsucker
Green-tailed Towhee
Wilson’s Warbler
MacGillivray’s Warbler
Great Blue Heron (nice to see mid elevation riparian habitat)
Belted Kingfisher (also nice to see in mid elevation riparian habitat)
Dusky Flycatcher
Ring-necked Duck
Cassin’s Finch

Colorado State Forest (Gould Trail area)
While walking among the willows I ran into a female Moose with two
young.
Wilson’s snipe (very vocal)
Williamson’s Sapsucker
Pine Grosbeak

Pingree Park Rd and Pennock creek area.
White-breasted Nuthatch (nest cavity in a ponderosa pine with a juvi
in it)
Townsend’s Solitaire (this bird was very vocal and it flew over head
singing while flying in sharp erratic turns with its wings spread).
Common Nighthawk
Brown Creeper
Williamson’s Sapsucker
Red-breasted Nuthatch
