Good morning,

The first stange sighting of the day was at about 5:15 this morning when I
awoke to the sound of a CORDILLERAN FLYCATCHER outside my window. This is the
first time I've detected this species anywhere near my house. Apparently it was
a good omen because at 9:30 am there was a HOODED WARBLER and an OVENBIRD
singing their hearts out in the drainage where the Hooded set up shop last year
in the Eldorado Mountain Open Space. I've been checking for him a couple times
a week and had pretty much given up hope for his return. To get to this spot,
park at the Eldorado Mountain Open Space trailhead on CR 67 just prior to
dropping into Eldorado Springs off Eldorado Springs Drive. Walk up the dirt
road and keep to the right when the road forks. Walk north along the hogback
and then through the road cut. The road turns south along the west side of the
hogback. Soon you'll get to where the road turns across the drainage. That's
the spot. This is where the Fowler Trail meets the dirt road.

On a side note, I should mention that the Hooded was not alone last year. One
quiet winter day I went scrounging around the Hooded's favorite box elder in
search of his nest. It was right there were it was supposed to be, 3 meters
from the box elder, a foot off the ground attached to some vertical choke
cherry stems. This suggests to me that there was a female in there who at least
built a nest. This drainage is a real biological hot-spot and worth the hike to
enjoy the rich bird and butterfly life. I even had a Prairie Rattlesnake here
the other day.
