Folks,

About a year ago I learned of black-chinned hummingbirds in my area
(Coal Creek Canyon.) Ever since then I've been straining to look
closely at throats to try to make out ones that might be black not
red. I've found I really just cannot tell (except when in bright light
when light reflects off) and although I believe I have seen some that
are black I cannot be sure. Does anybody have any advice for me on how
to get better at making such a determination between the two species?
I'm really eager to know if I am seeing something new to me, or not.

BTW: I assume this is a rufous humming bird outside of my window
today, but I was surprised to see it's green throat. I took quite a
few photos (none great, all through window, all green) but I felt I
caught a flash of red at one point, despite seeing the whole throat
green most of the time. Could this just be tricks of the light/angle?
