Hello, Birders. No rarities to report, but Hannah and I observed had fun, all the same, birding at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, yesterday evening, Wednesday, July 16th. Here's what we found: - A flock of 10 Bushtits. My only previous sighting of the species at Greenlee was back on January 19 of this year. Neat to be witnessing the ongoing range expansion of this species in Colorado. (We're just a few miles from Weld County, where Bushtit is a mega.) - A Common Nighthawk that actually *landed on the water* for a few seconds. That behavior is more typical of Lesser Nighthawk, actually, so I got excited. But this bird was a pretty straightforward, albeit drenched, Common. - Five hatch-year Wood Ducks. I assume they must've been hatched back in the wilds, so to speak, of Greenlee Preserve. And assuming that's the case, it fascinates me that I failed to detect them. My last sighting was more than 2 months ago, back on May 13th. Well, just goes to show, there's always something you don't see out there... - *Two* families now of Pied-billed Grebes. See comment above about failure to detect. All the while, I had assumed there was just one pair of Pied-bills out there. The lil'uns make an amazing ruckus. - One Spotted Sandpiper. This was a migrant or, at least, a bird wandering in from somewhere else, as I hadn't seen one at the site in more than 2 months. I love this time of year. So much is happening. Everything's on the move. The birdlife is so dynamic. And any day now--any *night* now, I suppose--the most exciting thing of all will happen. See next e-mail message...
