I have been doing a lot of insect collecting of late and the following are some
birds that keep getting in the way.

Glenmere Park in Greeley (Weld) on July 14:
Cattle Egrets (a few nesting pairs) on the island with the other nesting Snowy
Egrets and Black-crowned Night-Herons

GR96 (Murphy's Pasture) across the Pawnee Grasslands in Weld County on July 15:
Solitary Sandpiper in flooded roadside ditch along with a pair of Avocets and
just under two quadrillion mosquito wrigglers (don't go out there until
Homeland Security announces a reduction in the alert status ("Yellow" or less),
probably sometime near Halloween)

Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Kiowa County east of Eads on July
16-17:
Burrowing Owl fledgling that flew into the Park Service garage and was rescued
via insect net (net and bird no worse for wear) - I've had a lot of non-bird
things in my net but never an owl.
Dickcissel (heard a few) where aren't they out there this year?
Cassin's Sparrow (several) ditto
Grasshopper Sparrow (few) ditto

Tamarack Pond at Tamarack Ranch SWA north of Logan 38.5 on July 19 (with Bill,
Inez, and Marcelina Prather, and Ann Cooper):
Field Sparrow (at least 2-3 heard)
Northern Cardinal (at least 1, maybe 2 heard) along the Platte River north of
Tamarack Pond
Towhee (sounded very much like Eastern (abbreviated somewhat into "driiiink
teeee!"), probably of mixed blood) north of Tamarack Pond
Bell's Vireo (1 heard) east of Tamarack Pond
Indigo Bunting (heard) north of Tamarack Pond (where the ticks and humidity are)
Warbling Vireo (Bill and I remarked that the one prominent singer we heard did
NOT sound "eastern" (i.e., very similar to "western" subsp.)

ene of Summit Springs Battlefield (SR 63 at mp 50 about 4-5 miles south of I-76
in Logan County) on July 19:
Upland Sandpiper

Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins (Larimer):
Broad-tailed Hummingbird (nest that I've been following fledged babies sometime
around July 18-19) confirmed by Becca Reid, local teacher and wildlife
enthusiast who I showed this nest to - interestingly, Becca, while checking on
our nest, found another nest with a female on eggs around 17July (also in
Grandview Cemetery)

Along Twin Lakes trail north of Lost Lake (just north of the Laramie River Road
which is Larimer County 103 Road) on July 21:
American Three-toed Woodpecker (just below the dam at Lost Lake) in both
mountain pine beetle and spruce beetle trees
American Three-toed Woodpecker (north of Laramie Lake along the trail to Twin
Lakes) also in beetle kill
*Hummingbird sp. (appeared quite large, female, I strongly suspect either
Blue-throated or Magnificent) north of Laramie Lake but before Twin Lakes,
probably no shot at refinding this bird (it just flew past and into a lodgepole
pine forest out of sight - alas, either spp. would be a state bird for me)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (several recent fledglings heard begging, etc.) along
Twin Lakes Trail from Lost Lake to Twin Lakes)
Red Crossbill (a few little squadrons going over, not sure which race) along
the Twin Lakes Trail north of Lost Lake
Pine Grosbeak (one heard) along the Twin Lakes Trail north of Laramie Lake in
an area of extensive beetle kill
