Saturday, there seemed to be more egrets at Lowry than any place in Denver
County except City Park.

Wetlands and fields off 11th, east of Quebec
- Great Egret - 1
- Snowy Egret - 1 juvenile
Havana & Alameda Blvds. (Marsh on northwest corner)

Westerly Creek Dam and Wetlands*
- Snowy Egret - 14, mostly juveniles
- Also Black-crowned Nightheron - 1 juvenile
City Park's Farrell Lake island (Friday)
- Snowy Egret - 36, mostly juvenile
- Black-crowned Nightheron - 24, mostly juveniles
*Frank found 2 Snowy Egret probable nesting sites at the western edge of
the east lake beneath the sheltering dam. There may also be other sites,
including a nightheron site, here or at the west lake, and ?creek. The
ridgeline of the dam is just high enough that a Red-winged Blackbird flew by
Frank's shoulder.
This unmarked and little known area is off Sports Blvd., east of Fairmont
Blvd., past the athletic fields and hangars, at the bridge over the creek.
Designated parking (only).
Egrets, nightheron, and other birds may be on the creek.
To reach the wetlands and dam, go through one of the holes in the orange
plastic fence. This may feel slightly wrong, but lots of friendly runners,
walkers, and do this. Walk south, through the weedy vegetation, to the old
asphalt path. Follow it through the fields and past small ponds, and up
the gentle incline to the ridgeline of the dam. It continues east and west
along the ridgeline, and is a great place to set up a scope that you should
probably bring to see the birds in the fields, cottonwoods, marshes, and
ponds or lakes below. This is a protected wetland, and there is no access.
Note: There is an optional steep path up the west end of the dam rampart,
near Fairmont. A sometimes muddy track east of the bridge follows the
creek and leads into fields, ponds and also leads to the dam path.
Security says that even though this is private property, birders may use
it.
