Nick Komar and I went birding this morning in Larimer County.
Our first stop was a Timnath Reservoir, it was very birdy, but didn't have
anything of interest there. The water level is very high, just like all other
lakes in the area.
Our next stop was Cottonwood Hollow, where we saw 3 Least Bitterns.
The first one we had, which was an adult female, flew into the north east side
of Artists Pond. We never saw this bird again, so we are thinking it was still
in the north east side of the pond when we left.
The second, which was a juvenile, was sitting out at the edge of the cattails
at the south east side of Artists Pong and we watched it for 10-15 minutes
before it went back into the cattails. Four observers got photographs of this
bird.
The third bird, an adult male, was observed at the same time as the juvenile
walking through the cattails. It then flew into a tree a short distance away on
the south east side of the pond. We watched the bird walk around in the tree
for a while and it was still sitting there when we left. This bird was also
photographed.
A few birds of interest we had there was 1 Sage Thrasher and 2 Chipping
Sparrows.
