I made a trip to Western Colorado this week - it was a little off-season for songbirds, but I managed to get some decent sightings.
Ventus Park, Glenwood Springs, Garfield County, Aug 4th Cedar Waxwing 4+ juveniles; Gray Catbird 1. Hw 325 to Rifle Gap Reservoir, Garfield County, Aug 4th Pinyon Jay 5+, they were attracted to a house below the golf course; Clark's Nutcracker 2+; Canyon Wren singing; Rock Wren feeding young; Black-throated Gray Warbler. Colorado National Monument, Mesa County, Aug 4th Peregrine Falcon 2; Gray Flycatcher; Juniper Titmouse; Bushtit (heard); Black-throated Gray Warbler 2+. The flycatcher and titmouse were found at Ute Mountain Overlook. Around Grand Junction, Mesa County, Aug 4th/5th Gambel's Quail on 2-3 locations. Sweitzer Lake, Delta County, Aug 5th Forster's Tern 2, Western Grebe 10; Yellow-headed Blackbird 1m. Escalante State Wildlife Area, Delta County, Aug 5th. Gambel's Quail 4; Ash-throated Flycatcher, near mid-entrance; Blue Grosbeak, 2+ singing. Box Canyon, Ouray County, Aug 5th. Black Swift, 4 birds on 3 nests. There were quite a few hummingbird feeders around town. Red Mountain Pass, Ouray/San Juan Counties, Aug 5th. American Coot, 2 at Crystal Lake; Wilson's Warbler feeding young; Lincoln's Sparrow singing; White-crowned Sparrow singing. Black Canyon of the Gunnison, South Rim, Montrose County, Aug 6th Northern Harrier, juvenile flying east along rim; Townshend's Solitaire 3+ along rim; Black-throated Gray Warbler. KOA Campground, Buena Vista, Chaffee County, Aug 6th Calliope Hummingbird, probably immature male on feeder.
