Hi Everyone--

Today 8/9, I drove over to the Brainard Lakes area and hiked the Mount
Audubon trail all the way to the summit and back, a total of about 8 miles.
There were lots of baby birds around: 2 baby Pine Grosbeaks just past the
entrance station this morning, baby Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned
Kinglets, Gray-headed Juncos, Brown Creepers, Yellow-rumped and even a
Townsend's Warbler, and Red-breasted Nuthatches were in feeding flocks in
the spruce forest. A silent Hammond's Flycatcher was in the krummholtz about
halfway up. A family group of four Brown-capped Rosy-Finches were in the
lower tundra. Five White-tailed Ptarmigan were crouching among rocks in the
upper tundra (their clucking gave them away). Baby American Pipits and
White-crowned Sparrows were much in evidence. On the way back down through
the spruce forest, mom Am. Three-toed Woodpecker was feeding grubs to a
well-grown juvenile male (it had yellow forehead, but visible yellow
rictus).

Fun butterflies for me included several Phoebus Parnassians, lots of Mead's
Sulphurs, and several Dun Skippers. I also saw what I think was a Spotted
Blue.
