So, in a fruitless crabapple tree today were one adult female American Robin,
two spotted juvenile American Robins, and one dispersed-from-the-mountains
adult female Western Tanager. My questions are these: Did the mother robin
take the children there as a learning experience ("Remember this visual
signature, as this tree often pays off in the form of food")?, did the mother
check it out for herself per past positive experience, find it empty this day,
and the kids just followed her as they've been doing their entire, brief
fledged lives?; did the tanager go to the tree per positive experience with the
tree in the lowlands and simply find it empty this time; did the tanager
associate with the robins per positive past lowland experience with a species
of bird which, in part, shares a similar diet; was this event a combination of
the above?; was it an event taking place for reasons unlisted?; or was it all
no different that us associating briefly with a certain subset of other humans
at a busy interesection while we all go our separate ways? I tend to think it
was not chance, but who knows?

Sort of expected to see dispersing pewees and maybe an Olive-sided Flycatcher
today, but did not. No Lesser Goldfinches, Chipping Sparrows, or Pine Siskins.
No evidence of the Broad-tailed Hummingbirds that nested on site not long ago.
Three White Pelicans sailed overhead, destination City Park. A few chic
Turkey Vultures headed west from their Mountain Avenue roost for brunch. The
Black-capped Chickadees seem to be working honeysuckle these days, both for
berries and witches-broom aphids.
