Hello everyone,

I got out yesterday afternoon to look for Sulids, rare cormorants, sand-plovers
etc. Unfortunately none of those appeared. Boulder Reservoir has dropped
significantly, leaving an attractive shoreline on the north shore. The only
birds of note here were 7 adult and 1 juvenile CALIFORNIA GULL. Only shorebirds
were 3 KILLDEER. Cottonwood Marsh is now Cottonwood Pond and is barely worth
looking at. Maybe the high water will help replenish the food base here, but
otherwise the murky depths don't have the spot's normal shorebird magnetism.
North Teller Lake has a small sand island and a few feet of open shore. Again,
only shorebirds present were 3 KILLDEER. 7 GREAT EGRETS slowly hunted the
shore, and scores (150+) of local CANADA GEESE were loafing around. The pond by
the recycle center on 63rd St was very full of water and empty of birds. This
spot sometimes has a little shore which attracts the common (but someday a
rare) Tringa sandpipers. The best birding of the day was to be had at Sombrero
Marsh (down south of Arapahoe on 63rd). There were 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and a
KILLDEER on the little bit of exposed mud. This is one of the only natural
bodies of water in Boulder Co., and when there's actually water it's a very
appealing muck-puddle. Plenty of eclipse MALLARDS present, and I had a fun time
studying some eclipse/female BLUE-WINGED TEAL. The highest concentration of
Double-crested Cormorants that I have found in town is around the private swim
beach on Baseline Reservoir. None were loafing on the floating rafts yesterday
evening, so they must go somewhere else to roost. It was interesting to note
that a good 300 + RING-BILLED GULLS were going in to roost on Valmont Reservoir
proper, seen from Legion Park.

Good birding,

Christian Nunes
