The Denver Field Ornithologists’ monthly feature meetings resume this month on
August 24, and who better to launch the new season but mega-birder John
Drummond!
A visit to Bolivia: It's a thrilling account of 12 days and 429 species,
"despite civil unrest, road blockages and canceled returning flights from La
Paz, we successfully covered Bolivia's topographic diversity and great variety
of habitats." DFO member John Drummond will talk about his amazing Bolivia trip
on August 24, 2009. John will bring many pictures, including more of the
endangered Red-fronted Macaw shown above. John and the birders recorded
numerous regional endemics shared with Southern Peru such as Hooded
Mountain-Toucan, Light-crowned Spinetail, Diademed Tapaculo (ext),
Golden-collared Tanager (ext), and Orange-browed Hemispingus. Others shared
with northwest Argentina included Blue-capped Puffleg, Rufous-bellied Saltator,
and Citron-headed Yellow-Finch. Twelve or thirteen endemics were seen including
marvelous views of the endangered Red-fronted Macaw, Black-hooded Sunbeam,
Cochabamba Mountain-Finch and the Rufous-faced Antpitta (ext). Other favorites
during the main trip
included Greater Rhea, Andean Condor, Cliff Parakeet, Yungas Pygmy Owl,
Cream-backed Woodpecker, and Giant Conebill. The lucky four birders on the
extension trip managed to add Short-winged Grebe, Scimitar-winged Piha (one of
the rarest birds in South America), Chestnut-crowned Cotinga, Rufous-bellied
Seedsnipe, and Berlepsch‘s Canastero. Mark your calendars for this Bolivian
experience.
The presentation starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Denver Field Ornithologists
monthly meetings are held on the 4th Monday of each month August to April (but
excluding December). All DFO meetings are interesting and the company of bird
watchers is always worthwhile to keep. DOORS OPEN BY 7:00 p.m. AND ARE LOCKED
AT 7:30 p.m. Plan to arrive by 7:15 p.m. on these dates. Meetings are held at
the Ricketson Auditorium in Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Park on the
north side of museum and walk around to the west door between 7 p.m. and 7:30
p.m. If late, you can enter through security/volunteer door, but this does
create problems for our hosts at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
