While backpacking this weekend in subalpine habitat we came up 2 Pine
Grosbeaks foraging on the ground in front of us eating unripe
whortleberry fruits. I thought this might be unusual so I looked up
the BNA account
and found the following about their foraging behavior, "..spends much
time foraging near trunks of large trees; also spends much time on
ground in openings of forest during late summer when eating unripe
seeds and developing ovaries of forbs (CSA)."
