Not wanting to be left behind far from the frontier of birding
discoveries, Todd Deininger and I headed up into the mountains looking
for unusual ducks on mountain lakes.

Well, not too much luck-we found absolutely nothing in Gilpin County,
one Redhead in Clear Creek County at Georgetown, but a few things of
interest on Lake Dillon including a Pacific Loon (the only loon/scoter
type we found), about 20 Eared Grebes and a Herring Gull. Perhaps we
were too late as most of the smaller bodies of water (e.g. around
Empire) were iced to some extent.
