I got to see the Jaeger on 11/11 near the boat marina at Chatfield State Park.
1].I agree with everything Ira said, and the flight seemed alot faster than a
Pomarine Jaeger to me. I felt like I was on a pelagic boat trip because of the
action. The bird would be resting in the water and when a Ring-billed Gull flew
overhead, it would take off in pursuit. The second Ring-billed Gull it chased
showed a great example of Kleptoparasitism. The Jaeger was chasing the Gull
flying about one foot above the Gull. Both birds banked at exactly the same
time, with about a foot of distance between them. This behavior went on and on
from the far south side, then with the birds flying to the west side, then
ending up over my head, at the marina. Then, BAM!, the Gull spit out
something[looked to be about 4 inches long]. As the Gull spit this morsel out,
the Jaeger zipped under the bird and caught the morsel in mid air. The Jaeger
went straight down to the water and swallowed the tidbit, and then rested for a
long time. When the bird flew I think I was able to pick out 2 very short,
central tail tip extensions.
2]. One immature Harris's Sparrow showed up in my yd. today, in Jefferson
county. If the bird hangs around I'll post it again[if some folks want to try
to see it] I'm sure the coldfront which is heading our way, may have pushed
this bird further south. Don't know what the bird will do after the weather
changes. I've had Harris's Sparrow in my yd. before, but this one seems more
skittish than the one I had before.
Happy Birding!
