Hi All,

Many years ago out at Sawhill ponds I saw a Red-winged Blackbird land on a
cattail that was too weak to support his weight. As the cattail bent toward the
surface of the pond a huge Largemouth Bass came up under it and engulfed the
blackbird! Another interesting fish tale was related to me by one of the
biologist at the forest service lab in Laramie WY where I used to work. They
were conducting electroshocking surveys of the trout in Hog Park Creek below
the reservoir of the same name. When they arrived at the spillway there was an
adult Common Merganser with 3 young ducklings swimming on the plunge pool below
the dam. When they returned from the days work there were only 2 ducklings.
They shocked the pool and got up a 27" Brown Trout. When they pumped the
stomach they found the 3rd duckling! So far my rubber duck fly imitations have
not produced.

Subject: [cobirds] Cliff Swallows & Squawfish -- Moffat

Bob Righter periodically sends us an historical gem; here's one that appeared
in the Nov. 23 2009 issue of High Country News, attributed to a 1995
publication, just reissued, by Fred Quartarone, who interviewed 111 old-timers
about endangered Colorado River fish, "Historical Accounts of Upper Colorado
River Basin Endangered Fish." Web site: ColoradoRiverRecovery.fws.gov

"Chuck Mack, of Craig, Colo. tells that, during the early 1950's on the Green
River near Lodore Canyon: He watched as baby cliff swallows--eager to leave
their nests--flapped their wings hard but often flopped down into the water.
'Every big squawfish in the Green River must have migrated to the canyon to
feast on the swallows because we sure caught a lot of them. We managed to land
a lot of 10 to 20 pounders (and) everyone that we gutted out had a stomach
plumb full of baby swallows!"
