Dear Cobirders,
I stopped by Valmont proper (the 75th St. entrance) at lunch today to
test my cold weather gear. The ever-so-slight north wind coupled with the 11F
temperatures made viewing anything difficult due to tear build-up in my eyes.
It seemed like today there were more Hooded Mergansers than Red-breasted
Mergansers, but the lake-effect fog made distant birds impossible to see.
Still, there were a fair number of birds close enough to identify, including
two Western Grebes, many, many American Coot, Common Mergansers and
Red-breasted Mergansers. A Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk and Rough-legged Hawk
rounded out the count for the raptor group. Don't bother to view the
reservoirs from Legion Park if you have time, since the fog makes Leggett
Reservoir un-scopable.
There were a handful of Goldeneyes, most of them sleeping, and all of the males
were Common Goldeneyes. The few female Goldeneyes that were awake were Common
Goldeneyes. My question is, does anyone know if there a reliable way to
identify sleeping female Goldeneyes to species?
Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
