I believe I found two different Trumpeter Swans at the private Canon City
(as opposed to Pueblo Valco) ponds that were viewable from the road today.
After I found and photographed the swan I left and returned. I refound, I
thought, the swan and took more photos (I checked back late today and could
not find any swan and the pond was freezing so not likely to be there
tomorrow). Each appeared to be an adult Trumpeter Swan (white
body, straight, black bill with black lores, black legs and feet). When I
uploaded the photos to my computer I realized that the bird I photographed
second had lores that extend noticeably higher towards the crown than the
bird I first photographed. Also, the first bird has that rusty staining
found in birds that have been in the Yellowstone area due to minerals in the
water while the bird I photographed next did not have rusty staining but had
some blackish staining/color around it's head. I have posted pics of both
on my blog at http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com including one post with
very enlarged pics of both next to each other for better comparison. I
would appreciate hearing if anyone has any insight into the extended black
lores and black staining on the second bird.

Also today I found an additional Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (a female) as well
as a new sapsucker species--Red-naped (a male), both at the Abbey. That
makes three sapsucker species at this location (though I didn't see the
Williamson's today, I saw her day before yesterday). I haven't had time so
will have to post photos and discussion about these birds tomorrow.
