Day 19 of the Winter 2009-2010 White-winged Crossbill Visit to Grandview Cemetery: Joe Roller and I found the White-winged Crossbills this morning about 9:15am in west part of Section F. They were by themselves, then joined some Reds. I later saw them three more times, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with Reds. My last sighting was around noon, when the female, apparently without her boyfriend, was with a few Reds in Section B. Unless otherwise stated, the crossbills are always feeding on spruce seeds obtained from cones in the tops of mature Colorado Blue Spruce.
Other birds of note today: Bald Eagle (adult) flyover Townsend's Solitaire (1) Cedar Waxwing (few) American Kestrel male atop a spruce again Total of 24 species today (since the beginning of this concerted effort to monitor the crossbills, I have seen a total of 41 species at Grandview - this seems like a pretty helfty total, but is probably typical of any good chunk of urban forest habitat along the Front Range at this time of year with this much scrutiny. 23 of the 41 species were somehow involved with Colorado Blue Spruce, either feeding on it or in it, hiding in it, harrassing something hiding in it, or perched atop it).
