Colorado Public Radio (KCFR, 90.1 FM in Denver) will run a short squib on the
CBC on Monday morning -- if we're lucky, a minute long instead of 30 seconds.
Bob Lafley, working from a National Audubon press release, interviewed me over
the phone about it. I was not brilliant, though I hope that with the magic of
cutting & pasting, he makes it sound better than our raw conversation.

Anyway, it will include, I hope, information about how to get to the CBC
website to sign up for counts (www.audubon.org/birds/cbc).

I wish I'd had a script. Preparing for the interview, I did pull up some
interesting items.

* Somebody in Pueblo participated in the first count, Christmas afternoon,
1900. That list has 13 species, 242 individuals including 100 'Western Tree
Sparrows. Last year Pueblo Res. had 121 species, whch included 10 species of
gulls (9461 individuals).

* The Denver count on Christmas Day 1934 counted 22 species, 593 individuals,
including 300 Red-winged Blackbirds and 487 magpies. No geese at all. Last year
Denver had 92 species, 94,113 individuals, including 16,244 Canada Geese.

* Last year John Martin Res. counted 63,000 Snow and Ross's Geese plus 22,800
Canada and Cackling.

* Last year CBCs occurred from tip to tip in the Western Hemisphere: Barrow
Alaska to Antarctica. Read the article in the CBC publication about the
Antarctica count -- it's almost like a mystery novel.

* From data at the CBC site you can prepare graphs that show species trends
from 1940 to date; for instance, in Denver, upward trends for Red-tailed Hawk
and American Robin; sort of static for Townsend's Solitaire and slightly
downward for Rough-legged Hawk. The last may tie in with the article in the CBC
publication about how many species have shifted their CBC "Center of Abundance"
to the north.
