In that I continue to get calls about the
Rosy-Finches, I thought I’d let folks know, the birds have left since the snow
quit falling and the weather warmed up. They’ve been coming just
about every time the weather gets rough, since I started watching (02/08…three
seasons). They’ll be back, I’m sure…but
they’re not here right now.
In the last couple of days I’ve seen several
Sharpies or Cooper’s …or both? Both
spot-backed youngsters and the adult gray-backed birds visit. The hard part
for me is the difference in
male Cooper’s and female Sharpies. I
know the Cooper’s tail is longer and more rounded, but it’s still hard for me to
discern the difference.
Also here to check out the 100s of Rosies was a
VERY dark morph Red-tailed Hawk…so big and dark (almost completely black…a tiny
bit of lighter rufus at the neck and lighter under-tail coverts), I thought (at
first) it was an eagle! LOL
A dozen-plus Evening Grosbeaks visit daily and
yesterday I counted two Song Sparrows under the finch-feeders where I toss
sunflower seeds.
My friend and neighbor Polly had a Cassin’s
Finch visit yesterday for the first time in two years, and the jays continue to
visit her: Steller’s, Blue Jays, Scrub and Pinyon Jays…the Pinyon in numbers
approaching 50 at a time …I’ve not seen
either a Scrub Jay nor a single Pinyon Jay in my yard…ever.
And another neighbor up the street says their resident Greater Roadrunner
continues to be seen regularly; I read they stay all year. Is that right?
While the gentleman who came to see the
White-winged dove I’ve seen several times daily for months was disappointed by
the no-show; I (like
Polly and her husband) enjoy inviting birders to visit my yard. Just call
