Hello, Birders.

Marcel Such & Joel Such and I stopped in at the Valmont Reservoir complex,
Boulder Reservoir, late yesterday afternoon, Monday, Dec. 14th. With the recent
cold snap, there were predictably a lot of gulls, geese, waterfowl, etc. out
there. We saw 1 adult Glaucous Gull, 1 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, and 2
adult Thayer's Gulls out there. Also 2 California Gulls, 10+ Herring Gulls, and
2,000+ Ring-billed Gulls. A single Eared Grebe was a bit late. Common
Mergansers were in the low 4 digits, but we saw just a handful (fewer than 20)
of Red-breasted Mergansers, which was a bit of a surprise. There was an adult
Bald Eagle, of course, and a Prairie Falcon made 3 passes above us. The goose
fly-in, at around 4:45 p.m., was stirring, with easily 1,000+ geese in the air
at once; just Canadas and Cacklings, so far as we could tell. Gazillions of
coots, Gadwalls, diving ducks, Pied-billed Grebes, all that stuff--par for the
course during those times when there's basically no open water elsewhere in the
local area for them.

Oh, and this provides me with an opportunity to remind folks that the annual
bird-the-bowels-of-Valmont trip isn't too far off. The outing will be Saturday,
Jan. 9th, 2010, starting at noon and going till sundown. Leaders will be Bill
Schmoker, Marcel Such, Bill Kaempfer, Yours Truly, and perhaps one or two other
folks who will be forcibly conscripted just as soon as they show up for the
field trip. The outing will be hosted by Xcel Energy, and it will be
co-sponsored by the Boulder Bird Club, Colorado Field Ornithologists, Denver
Field Ornithologists, and the American Birding Association.
