Hi All,

We hope you all can come out for the Douglas County Christmas Bird
Count on Saturday 1-2-2010. There are many great birding spots in this
count to explore. My route is quite unique. We'll be birding on the
"back road" of Roxborough State Park and then on into Douglas County
Open Space. The hike is about 4.5 miles RT, mostly flat with one big
hill (.5 miles up). Meeting at 8am at the Visitor Center. End time 2pm
at the latest, so bring lunch. See below for all the other fantastic
areas in this count. Sign up information on the bottom of this post.

110TH ANNUAL AUDUBON CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

The Douglas County Christmas Bird Count will take place this year
on Saturday, January 2, 2010. this will be one of more than 1,900
similar counts designed to help survey wintering birds across the
United States and other countries.

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the original Christmas
Bird Count, taken Christmas Day, 1900, by observers in 25 locations,
mostly around major northeastern cities. Since then, this annual
event has grown to include over 55,000 participants.

This year every Canadian Province, every American State, Bermuda,
many Central and South American countries and numerous West Indies and
Hawaiian Islands will submit their results to the National Audubon
Society, which sponsors and supervises the count.

This will be the thirtieth year Douglas County has participated.
The area to be counted includes Roxborough State Park, Sedalia, Castle
Rock, Perry Pines, Perry Park, Louviers and other areas in between.
The count will start by 7:30 am and finish by 3:30 pm, with a chili
supper and potluck and count compilation gathering afterwards at
Roxborough State Park Visitor Center.

All counts are open to and welcome all participants, regardless of
skill level. If you would like to help, please sign up by contacting
Roxborough State Park at (303) 973-3959 by Tuesday December 29, 2009
and mention which area you'd like to participate in.

What a great way to start off the new year! Have a happy and safe
holiday everyone.

Cordially,

Alison Kondler
