Hi COBirders,

Just back from my Colo Spgs CBC site. My area includes "Section 16"
and the Palmer Trail, in the foothills and cliffs above the Bear Creek
Nature Center on the SW side of Colo Spgs. The Douglas Fir are loaded
with cones - like I've never seen - and the montane birds are working
them, mostly at higher elevations there. I haven't done all of my
numbers, but I had over 110 Red-breasted Nuthatch, dozens of Cassin's
Finch, Pine Siskin, Mountain Chickadees, a couple of Red Crossbills,
and an even dozen Evening Grosbeak - a first at this site in my 25
years of counting. All were seen high up in the Douglas Fir, on the
sunny slopes. I even had my first Pygmy Nuthatches feeding in Douglas
Fir cones - (aren't they supposed to be Ponderosa specific???)

I t was a VERY good day.
