The 20th Hotchkiss Christmas Bird Count was held yesterday (Jan 3).  We had
a good number of observeres show up and covered the area very well.
Highlights were: 10 Red Crossbills (New for the count!), 13 Great-horned
Owls, 2 Merlins, 1 Prairie Falcon (see Dennis Garrison's photos on WSBN), 14
Lewis's Woodpeckers, 1 Loggerhead Shrike, 12 Pinyon Jays, 8 Juniper
Titmouse, 2 Rock Wrens, 8 Canyon Wrens, 5 Marsh Wrens, 2 American Dippers, 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 27 Western Bluebirds, 21 Mountain Bluebirds, 6
American Pipits, 4 Cedar Waxwings, 25 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 20 American
Tree Sparrows, 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, 12 Brewer's Blackbirds, and 21 Evening
Grosbeaks.  I am waiting for a list from one small area, but it looks like
we did very well with a slightly higher than average 77 species reported
(including count week birds found so far - Lesser Scaup, Virginia Rail, and
Lesser Goldfinch).
