COBirders,

I made a quick stop at Big Johnson Reservoir today (~10:00 am) to see what
might be there before the storm hit.  No water coming in now so this cold snap
could finally freeze it up for a while.  There were many Northern Shovelers and
Pintails, very few of any other species of duck.  The gulls were few, 93 total
that I could tell for sure.  There was one bunch tightly packed at a distance
so not sure how accurate the count was but only +-5 birds would be my guess.
The interesting part was the ratio of gulls.

3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (all adults)
22ish Ring-billed Gulls  (all adults)
68 Herring Gulls (all but 1 were adults)

There could have been a few more Herring Gulls in the tightly packed group but
I just could not tell.  About 30 birds left around 10:15 am and appeared to
head towards a dump that is southeast of Colorado Springs.  The other group
left about 15 minutes later but I failed to see where they went as I was busy
picking through the Canada Geese.  I would bet the reservoir will still have
open water tomorrow but anything beyond that I somewhat doubt unless the wind
picks up again.
