Driving back to Boulder from visiting friends in Carbondale today, I
stopped at the Blue River Sewage Plant north of Silverthorne. (We
birders visit some strange places.) Anyway, sure enough, there was a
male Barrow’s Goldeneye and several females in the “blue lagoon.” I
took a picture of the Barrow’s and posted it here:

I also made a Floydian map so you can find this place.

(BTW, if you want to know how to make such a map let me know and I
will email you my how-to tips). This sewage plant is approximately at
26450 Highway 9, Silverthorne.

I last saw Barrow’s Goldeneye at this sewage pond in February, 2008,
so not exactly a rarity, but fun to see if you are in the neighborhood
driving I-70 east or west during the winter.

Kudos to Dick Philby who saw 36 Barrow's in Carbondale--I missed them.

Good birding,
Tom Wilberding
