January D.F.O. Meeting

To the Sea and Shore with Bill Schmoker
Monday, January 25, 2010
7:30 p.m.

Through January’s short days and cold temperatures the sun sweeps low
across the southern sky and the symptoms of cabin fever can be detected
within the ranks of the Denver Field Ornithologists.  In the field, members
scope another winter duck, hear the distant calls of another mountain
chickadee,
and long for a sprinkling of Colorado’s beautiful spring warblers.
January’s D.F.O. presentation will be brought to us by the ever famous
Mr. Bill Schmoker who will offer up a pleasant break from the winter
doldrums.  Imagine yourself with the sun on your back, a light sea breeze
rustling
the dune grasses, waves gently breaking on the sandy beach, and your
binoculars focused on a small flock of peeps moving in unison along the water’s
edge.  Bill will sweep you away on this virtual journey to the sea and the
shore focusing on North America’s wonderful diversity of shorebirds, seabirds,
and a few gulls.
D.F.O. members know Bill as an engaging and knowledgeable speaker and
amazing wildlife photographer.  He is the past president of Colorado Field
Ornithologists and a birder par excellence.  Bill is a widely published
wildlife photographer, an author, and most especially an outstanding public
school science educator.  He is also a member of the Nikon Birding ProStaff and
lives with his wife and son in Longmont.
In March, 2005, D.F.O. members were entertained and edified by Bill’s
story of Whitey, the Boulder County Steller’s Jay.  This unusual individual
inexplicably lost its natural pigmentation turning from dark blue and black
to white (Acquired Albinism) beginning in the summer of 2003.  Bill
published the full details of Whitey in the January, 2006, issue of Colorado
Birds
(Vol. 40, Number 1, pgs. 7 - 11).  In January of 2006 Bill gave an auspicious
start to our new birding year with his presentation “A Birder’s New Year’s
Resolutions for 2006.”  Visit Bill at http://schmoker.org or

On January 25th join D.F.O. and Bill Schmoker for an evening far away
from the cold and snow of Colorado's winter.

The Denver Field Ornithologists monthly meetings are held in Ricketson
Auditorium at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in City Park.  These
meetings are free and open to the public and occur on the 4th Monday of each
month August through April (except December).  Park on the north side of the
Museum and walk around and enter through the Museum's west door.  Plan to
arrive by 7:15 p.m.; DOORS OPEN BY 7:00 AND ARE LOCKED AT 7:30 P.M.  If late,
you
can enter through the security/volunteer door, but this does create
problems for our hosts at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
