I went searching fjr gulls today east of Boulder in an attempt to relocate some of the rares recently reported. Highlights for particular spots are below, but the following species were either seen @ almost all sites or along the road: Canada Goose Cackling Goose (up to 50% at some sites) Mallard Common Goldeneye Ring-necked Duck Common Merganser American Kestrel Prairie Falcon (4 times this week near Valmont Res) Ring-billed Gull
My first stop was Erie Res. Lots of Common Goldeneyes and one first winter male unidentified. There were about 200 gulls as well. Species: 1 Glaucous Gull adult (might be the same bird seen in Broomfield yesterday) many American Herring Gulls American Wigeon 2 Thomas Res (on 119?): Morning Dove 5 2 Corvids flew over that were crow sized but looked ravenish. They did not call and I only got a brief look but they might have been the two Chihuahuan Ravens seen here on the 6th. Let me know if you relocate them. Tom Frost Res (off of Lowell in Broomfield County): Bald Eagle 1 adult Red-tailed Hawk 1 1 duck hybrid (guessing Ring-necked Duck x Lesser Scaup) Other species from various res's in Broomfield: Redhead 2 Pied-billed Grebe 1 Ended the day at Valmont Res and had the following: Western Grebe 5 (too far to check for Clark's) Horned Grebe 1 Northern Pintail 5 Northern Shoveler 4 Redhead 7 Gadwall 2 American Coot lots Hooden Merganser 2 Ferruginous Hawk 1 Bald Eagle 1 While here last night, another birder thought he saw the Iceland Gull fly in at around 5:20. It landed way out of scoping range, but it might be worth scanning for if you go around dusk. except for Glaucous, I am shutout for rare gulls. If anyone locates any on Thursday I would love a call. I'm planning on being out all day. Sorry for any typos, I dont have a pc and wrote this on a wii.
