Thanks for all the responses to my hawk question! There is wide agreement
that it is a rufous-morph red-tailed hawk.

Ann Price says See Plate 357, pg 348, of the *Raptors of Western North
America*, by Brian Wheeler.
And it resembles some photos by Schmoker:
http://schmoker.org/BirdPics/RTHA.html
This bird is a bit darker, but Wheeler does note "Belly and flanks vary from
mottled with dark brown to solid dark brown".

I found an interesting article on the subject by Jerry Liguori in "Birding"
http://www.aba.org/birding/v36n5p500.pdf

The bird was in a tree by the road in Cherry Creek State Park to the west of
the headquarters building. And people have observed it there for a couple of
winters.

Regarding camera equipment: the shots were taken with a panasonic G1 and
Olympus 70-300mm (effective 140-600mm).
The shot was not very sharp: here are a few others with that lens:

This is a great place to learn more about the sometimes difficult (for us)
art of hawk identification!
