I explored the Eaton Cemetary on Weld County Road 39 (about a mile east of
Eaton, 1/4 mile south of CR 74) late Sunday afternoon hoping to find crossbills
in some of tall spruces heavily laden with cones. Instead I found a
Golden-crowned Kinglet ("very rare" in winter on the Eastern Plains according
to Andrews and Righter, Colorado Birds, 1992) and a Mountain Chickadee (also
very uncommon that far east, about 40 miles from the foothills, among dozens of
Eurasian Collared-Doves, American Robins, House Finches and Dark-eyed Juncos
(with included several of the Cassiar variety - the cismontanus subspecies).
I suspect that the chickadee and the kinglet will hang around the cemetary for
a while, and should be fairly easy to refind. The kinglet called a few times
also.
